Five Years Without You, Chuck

When the Body Remembers What the Heart Has Lost

By The Souls Haven Death Doula Services | November 1, 2026

November 1st marks five years since I lost my brother, Chuck. Five years of learning to live with an absence that time cannot erase and a love that will never fade.

When I think of Chuck, I remember his beautiful smile, his unforgettable laugh, and the biggest hugs, kisses, and spins he would give me every time we saw each other. He was caring, playful, silly, and a joy to be around. He loved football, telling stories, and his children. His spirit brought people together, and his laughter is a sound I can still hear when I close my eyes.

But as November approached this year, I noticed something happening within me. My mood changed. I felt sad, angry, and emotionally unsettled. I didn't immediately recognize why I was feeling this way.

Then I realized: my body may have been responding to the anniversary of my brother's death before my mind fully acknowledged it.

When Grief Shows Up Unexpectedly

Grief doesn't always announce itself through tears. Sometimes, it shows up as irritability, exhaustion, sadness, restlessness, or emotions we cannot quite explain.

Our bodies and minds respond to memories and reminders of loss. Anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, and seasonal changes can bring feelings to the surface, sometimes before we consciously recognize the connection.

If you've noticed changes in yourself as a significant date approaches, give yourself grace. Pause. Reflect. Ask yourself what you might need.

You are not necessarily going backward in your healing. You may simply be experiencing a reminder of someone who matters deeply to you.

The Grief of Losing a Sibling

As a sister, I understand that losing a sibling means losing someone who shares a part of your history that no one else can fully understand.

You grieve the memories you shared, the conversations you'll never have, and the future you imagined experiencing together. You carry the love, the laughter, and the ache of knowing that someone who helped shape your life is no longer physically here.

You never stop being a sibling. You learn to carry that relationship differently.

As a death doula, I understand the importance of creating space for grief. But being knowledgeable about grief doesn't make me immune to experiencing it. I can support others while still needing compassion for myself.

Both truths can exist together.

A Gentle Reminder for Those Who Are Grieving

Grief is not a temporary moment that we simply move past. It changes over time, but the love remains.

You can laugh at a memory and cry because you cannot make another one. You can appreciate the life you shared while wishing you had more time.

Healing doesn't mean forgetting. It means learning to live while making room for the love and the loss.

If you are grieving, especially the loss of a sibling, give yourself permission to feel what you feel. Reach for support when you need it, and remember that you do not have to carry your grief alone.

In Loving Memory of Chuck

Chuck, five years later, I still hear your laugh. I still remember your smile, your stories, and the way you made every hug feel like an occasion.

I cherish your children, Cortez, Payton, and Kelis, and the memories that keep your presence alive in our family.

I wish we had more time. But I will continue to celebrate the joy you brought into our lives, the love you shared, and the memories death cannot take away.

As your sister, I will carry you with me always.

Five years without you. A lifetime of loving you.

Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever in my heart.

At The Souls Haven Death Doula Services, we recognize that every grief journey is different. Our hope is to remind you that your grief deserves compassion, your memories deserve space, and your healing does not have to follow anyone else's timeline.
